Happy 2024!

Happy New Year!!!!

Fun Fact: These are the actual numbers displayed under the NYE ball in Times Square!

2023 was a chaotic year to say the least with many ups and downs - from a 6 day hospital stay & dating debacles to 3 international trips across 6 countries & good times with amazing friends! 🙃

It’s always good to remember and appreciate all the experiences you have, the good and the bad.

Hope everyone has an amazing 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣4️⃣ filled with lots of joy, love, happiness, prosperity and good health! 🎉

Diner en Blanc NYC 2022

Last night I attended Diner en Blanc NYC right on the Hudson River outside of Brookfield Place. This year marked the 10th anniversary of Diner en Blanc in NYC!

Diner en Blanc NYC

At Diner en Blanc, thousands of attendees dress up in white, head to toe, and gather together for a large dinner celebration. What is unique and fun about this event, aside from everything being in all white, is:

  • you need to bring your own table, seats and picnic for dinner, however you can order a gourmet picnic basket

  • the location is a secret until just a few hours before the event

  • at the start of the event everyone waives their white napkins

The highlights of the night included delicious bites made by none other than Chef Todd English and featured champagne from Baron de Rothschild Champagne. I was lucky enough to had the opportunity to meet and chat with Todd in the media lounge, he was so down to earth and friendly!

Fun facts I learned about Todd English, despite using caviar for his high end clientele he is NOT a fan of caviar, but IS a fan of anchovies, in fact he likes to eat them straight!

Can’t wait to see where the Diner en Blanc will be held next year!

Cousins Girl Day!

Today I took my younger cousin Jenna out for a girl day! Jenna just finished her freshman year of college and this was our first time to hang out in the city without her parents! (I guess they trust me!)

Here’s the perfect girls day guide, especially if you are under 21:

Brunch at Maman
Maman is a cute restaurant/bakery/cafe for brunch and pastries, I love the ambiance at the restaurant - it is cute, yet classy, but still casual at the same time. We shared a ratatouille hash, some pastries and both got iced elderberry matcha lattes!

Kayaking on the Hudson at Pier 96
The Manhattan Community Boathouse at Pier 96, located at 55th Street & West Side Highway offers free kayaking throughout the summer. You can book a timeslot in advanced or just walk up, which is what we did. When you get there, you sign a waiver, get a life vest, paddle, wait until it is your turn and you are good to go for 30 minutes. This was a lot of fun and I would highly recommend!

Intrepid Museum
Next we decided to visit the Intrepid Museum as it was just down the block from kayaking. The Intrepid is a Sea, Air, & Space Museum on an actual aircraft carrier, featuring a lot of historical war and space exhibits. It is a bit pricy to visit, but definitely worth checking if you are into war history and want to be aboard a battle ship!

$1 Pizza
Jenna had never had $1 pizza, so we had to stop for some authentic pizza at 2 Bros before she headed home!

I love spending time with my family, can’t wait for the next cousins girls day!

Speed Mentoring with New York Edge

As many of you may or may not know, I am very involved with the non-profit New York Edge, in fact I am on the Young Professionals Council (YPC) and am a co-founder of the council. New York Edge is the largest provider of free after school programming for students K-12 in NYC.

volunteering New York Edge Eileen Tublin Kevin McCarthy Elizabeth Tam

Today we hosted our first volunteer event since the pandemic began. The event was a virtual speed mentoring program with MS355Q in Jamaica, Queens (unfortunately, due to school restrictions, we are not allowed into the schools). We did 3 rounds of cluster mentoring with the 8th graders of MS 355Q.

It was interesting to hear what the students were thinking when it came to careers and the entire HS process. They all had a diverse interest in careers and high schools. If you know me, you know how much I value learning and education - in fact my platform as Miss New York was “empowering youth through education, by providing them with the tools necessary to succeed in life.“ It was through third platform that I actually initially heard about New York Edge and became involved.

For those of you who are not from NYC, the NYC public high school process is like applying to colleges. There are so many high schools, general high schools, those that specialize in different subjects and magnet and specialized high schools that you need to take an exam to get into. I feel like most people do not fully understand the how rigorous the process is, so I am always happy to speak about it as I can relate and the experiences my friends and I had at the various schools.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, staff and everyone who helped coordinate this event! Hopefully we will be able to do more and bigger events soon… and in person!

If you are interested in getting involved with this event or getting involved with New York Edge, do not hesitate to reach out. I have been involved with New York Edge since 2013 and love the work that they do to provide free after school programming to students across NYC!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🎉

I am excited for 2022 and what the new year will bring! I hope everyone has an amazing 2022!

Fun Fact: These are the actual numbers displayed with the NYE ball in Times Square!

My New Year Resolutions this year are:

  • Reconnect & keep in better touch with friends and acquaintances

  • Take risks - keep an open mind when it comes to trying new things

  • No Regrets - don’t hold back!

  • Be true to myself

What are your resolutions for 2022?

As Macklemore said in his new song, which is also going to be my anthem for 2022,

“Next year’s gonna be better than last year!”

2021 was a tough year, but rather than viewing all the tragedy & hardships as problems, let’s look for the silver linings & turn them into opportunities! ✨ Where there are endings there are new beginnings!

Cheers to 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣2️⃣! 🥂

This is 33

First and foremost, I want to say THANK YOU to everyone for the warm wishes, gifts and birthday love! You really know how to make a girl feel special and I am so grateful for all of you!

Last night I went out to celebrate my birthday with some friends at Cathédrale in the East Village. The venue is GORGEOUS, I loved the high ceilings and ambiance! I can see why Heidi Klum had her infamous Halloween party here! I was pleasantly surprised by how the delicious food and desserts at Cathédrale were!

I was fortunate to have friends from many different parts of my life come - middle school to college debate to internships to my first and current job, even a friend from SF that happened to be in NY for the weekend.

After Cathédrale, we planned to go to Alphabet Bar, but it was closed before we even finished dinner, so we went to the Wren AND Pianos. We had such a good time, we actually ended up closing down both bars for the night! I have not done that or been out that late since pre-COVID or even in a few YEARS to be honest.

The COVID rates are starting to increase again, so I am happy I was able to get in one last hurrah and a first since the pandemic started in 2019 before it begins to get bad again.

Here’s to 33!

It's my Birthday!

Today is my BIRTHDAY!!!

I woke up today very excited & happy to celebrate my birthday and for what the year will bring! This past year was a bit of a rough year between the pandemic to my breakup, but it has only made me stronger and know this year will be my year!

Mother Nature decided to share in the excitement with amazing warm weather and sunshine today! ☀️ Here’s hoping for many more days like today! ❤️

I definitely had the “treat yo self” mindset today and treated myself to some dim sum for lunch from Tim Ho Wan, sesame balls from Dim Sum Palace & bubble tea from Ho Ho Te! I also splurged an got myself a nice ring from Local Eclectic! My ex’s super sweet mom also sent me a birthday/holiday gift from Aveda, which was a pleasant surprise I received today!

Tonight my friends and I will be having dinner at Cathedrale, a cute restaurant in the East Village. I can’t wait to celebrate tonight with my friends, especially those who I have not seen since pre-covid!

Broadway is Back

Freestyle Love Supreme Playbill

Freestyle Love Supreme

Tonight I went to see Freestyle Love Supreme, my first Broadway show since Broadway went dark because of COVID. Thank you American Express for the tickets!

Freestyle Love Supreme is one of Lin Manuel Miranda’s original Broadway plays, written before “In the Heights” and “Hamilton.” I had heard about this play, but honestly did not know what to expect from the show. However, by the end of the show, I absolutely LOVED it!

Freestyle Love Supreme Final Bow

Freestyle Love Supreme Final Bow

The concept of the show is very interactive, the performers rapped & beatboxed freestyle verses based on words and stories from the audience. (After the show I definitely wanted to give beatboxing another shot, if anyone wants to teach me, please let me know!)

The most interesting freestyle was based on a women in the audience’s childhood. The woman’s brother had put their pet hamster named “Chicken Nugget” in the freezer, and their grandmother unfortunately found the hamster hours later when she was making dinner… and you can imagine what condition the hamster was in… it was not pretty.

All of the freestyle performed were so original and fun, I can see why they won a Tony award!

I am so excited Broadway has returned! What play should I see next?

20 Years Later…

It’s hard to believe it has been 20 years since the tragedy of September 11, but we will never forget. 🇺🇸

9/11 Memorial aboard the USS Arlington

9/11 Memorial aboard the USS Arlington

I remember that day very clearly. There are a few moments that distinctly stick out to me from that tragic day.

I was in middle school in Queens at the time, sitting in math class and one by one my classmates were being called out of class, to the point we were joking as to who would he going home next.

Many hours later toward the end of the school day, my Spanish teacher rolls out a TV and finally shares what is going on. I was in disbelief. This made 0 sense to me for a few reasons, especially at such a young age. I was aware of what I was hearing but unaware and ignorant of all the global politics and tension of the world, not understanding the true magnitude of what had happened.

My mom picked me up from school and as you can imagine, what was normally a quick drive home took quite a while as the roads were all blocked with chaos.

With the towers down, we had not heard from my dad who worked in Brooklyn at the time but had to pass through the twin towers on the train to get to work. Needless to say, we were very worried. Thankfully he was running late to work that day and was not anywhere near the twin towers. I remember he came home super late, as he had to walk all the way back from the city to our house as the city was locked down.

I am still in disbelief that this happened and my heart goes out to all the families and loved ones for those who lost their lives on that tragic day.

We will always remember ❤️🤍💙

What a Night!

Today was an interesting night… but an adventure to say the least.

Last night I saw my now ex-boyfriend (long sad story and not used to using this term “ex”) for the first time in person after we ended things. It has been really sad, but I will get through it. As a result, I was anticipating tonight to be a quiet night to reflect on yesterday’s events, however this was not the case.

My producer / videographer from Style Music TV reached out to me with a fashion & beauty press event at the Crosby Street Hotel in Soho. I figured why not get dressed up and go out, it beats staying at home and being sad!

I went to the event, and it was definitely not what I had anticipated, it was a soiree of very cliquey unwelcoming fashion types. I was ready to turn around as soon as I saw the event, but figured why not - I was already there and was at a cute hotel with free drinks! I got some champagne and walked around. I ended up meeting this awesome gay couple - one of which works for Interview, which was founded by Andy Warhol and a modeling agent. We chatted a bit and I shared the news of my break up. Mitchell was very interested to learn more about the dating apps and how my ex and I had met. Its interesting how the dating game has changed so much in such a short time frame. We chatted for a bit and actually exchanged #’s - why not make new friends?!

On my way to the subway I passed the set of the new Sex & the City reboot, where I also made some new friends AND even caught a glimpse of none other than SJP, Sarah Jessica Parker! I made friends with a fellow fan and one of the lighting guys. I ended up switching #’s with both of them, however I was actually asked to get drinks by the fellow SJP fan who had shared her video of SJP with me! What a funny turn of events!

IMG_1909.jpeg

Ending the night on a high note, made my way home - the train was quick, not too packed and I felt very safe, the city is back! But that was not quite the end of my night… On the way home - I passed Krispy Kreme and got a delicious doughnut! I felt like I deserved it after the day I had yesterday! If you have not had a Krispy Kreme doughnut, you definitely need to try one. They are like clouds that melt in your mouth!

In an interesting turn of events, what I thought was going to be a terrible week and bust of a night ended up being full of fun surprises!

Don’t life get you down, always try to find your silver lining!

Happy Birthday Daniel!

Happy Birthday to my amazing boyfriend Daniel!

Today he turned 5 years old, we had Pokemon themed birthday decorations and went to the zoo! He even saw his favorite animal, the snow leopard, who came out just for him!

I hope you have the most amazing birthday, I LOVE YOU!!!

Happy First Date-iversary!

Happy First Date-iversary to my amazing boyfriend, Daniel!

One year in the books, many more to go - I LOVE YOU DANIEL!

Our First Date!

Who ever thought that what the girl we met at the bar would predict our future?

Fun story - on our first date at Barcelona Bar, we met a girl who’s birthday it was. She had asked us to take a picture for her and she offered to take one in return. She had asked how long we had been together, and we told her it was actually our first date! She did not believe us and thought we had been together for a while. We continued to have a great time and when we left, the birthday girl and her friends said “you guys are so cute together!”

Did Daniel pay these guys off? HAHA!

Thanksgiving COVID-19 Testing

IMG_7761.jpeg

Today I went to get tested for COVID-19 before heading home for Thanksgiving and spent 9 HOURS waiting for a COVID-19 rapid swab test at CityMD. I thought I’d show up 20-30 minutes prior to opening to beat the rush, but I guess everyone had that idea…

Here was my schedule for the day.

6:40 AM - Arrived at the end of the line

6:40 AM - Arrived at the end of the line

  • 6:15 AM - Wake Up

  • 6:25 AM - Walk to CityMD

  • 6:40 AM - Arrive at CityMD & look for end of the line. The line went down the avenue and around the corner to the end of the block (and wrapped around the next corner behind me)

  • 7:00 AM - CityMD officially opens

  • 8:00 AM - I made it to the front of the line, only to learn they were just taking down names and phone numbers a list and would call me when it was my turn, then I will only have 15-20 minutes to return

    • I was #82 on the list. There was only a small group of people (~12) waiting around outside at this point, so a few others and I stuck around and waited around for our turn - how long could it take? I live 15-20 minutes away, which was exactly how long it would take me to get back, so figured I should just stick around and worry about hustling back - my mistake!

  • 8:45 AM - 45 minutes later everyone still seems to be waiting outside

    • I asked the woman checking people in what number they were up to, in disbelief I learn they were only up to #6 on the list & she laughs that i am #82 on the list

    • Shocked they are still in single digits, I tell my line buddies to hold up one hand and one finger and that was the # they were up to. They were shocked as well!

  • 8:48 AM - At this point, I was freezing and disheartened by the lack of progress on the list - I decided to go home and wait to be called since it would definitely be a while.

  • 10 AM - No call yet

  • 11 AM - No call yet

  • 12 PM - No call yet

  • 12:15 PM - I called CityMD to see what # they are up to… Any guesses? They were only up to #50 since they opened, 5 hours ago. I guesstimated they see ~10 patients per hour

  • 1:30 PM - I received a call to return to CityMD - “you need to return in 15-20 minutes, your number will be called soon”

    • I immediately drop my fork, stop eating my lunch and hustle back

3:18 PM - Made it inside!

3:18 PM - Made it inside!

  • 1:48 PM - I make it to CityMD in just under 20 minutes and head to the front door of CityMD. The security guard shouts “MISS” and points to the line, of course there is another line. This one should be quick, right? WRONG

    • I see my line buddies from this morning and join them on this new line with ~10 people in front of me

  • 2:48 PM - 1 hour later, I am still standing in line & have not moved a bit

  • 3:00 AM - I am second on line… to get into the building, they are letting people enter the waiting room in small groups

  • 3:18 PM - I made it inside!!! They let a few of us in, I checked in, sat down & waited to be seen

3:45 PM - Finally being seen!

3:45 PM - Finally being seen!

  • 3:38 PM - About 2 hours since I ran over, my name is finally called and I am taken to a room to be swabbed & tested

    • The nurse takes my vitals - temperature, pulse and blood pressure

    • I am given the nasal swab test and the nurse leaves (probably a total of 5-7 minutes max)

  • 3:50 PM - The PA finally comes to see me after waiting for what seemed like a long time since the nurse left. She says sorry for the wait to get into CityMD and that they were trying to create a new more efficient system that gives a more accurate window of when to show up, asks if I need anything else while I am there and then dismisses me.

  • 3:52 PM - I stop by billing, confirm my information is correct

  • 3:54 PM - I am out the door. DONE!!!

  • 4:03 PM - Results are ready - my test is NEGATIVE!

COVID Test Result

Overall I spent a little over 9 hours end to end, and probably spent ~5 hours between waiting on line and commuting between my apartment and CityMD. This is definitely an experience I would NOT like to experience again. (I did offer the PA help in creating a more efficient waiting window system). However I am thankful they did give us the opportunity to go home, which I was able to utilize working for a few hours. I know other CityMDs did not give people the opportunity to do so.

While waiting online, I learned a few interesting facts:

  • The line was cut off after 2 hours of opening (7 AM - 9 AM) with 166 people on the list.

    • If I was half way down the list at #82 after 9 hours, how do they anticipate to finish another ~80 people by 9:30 PM in 5.5 hours?

  • I overheard person #61 arrived at 6 AM, 40 minutes before me! I was debating arriving or leaving my apartment at 6:30 AM, so I am glad that the 10 minute difference did not make much of a difference. What time did person #1 show up?

Thank you to the frontline workers for all of your work, especially on days like today! I appreciate all that you do!

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!
